Bacon Wrapped Smokies with Brown Sugar – The Perfect Party Appetizer

I have been making these Bacon Wrapped Smokies for years, and they never get old. There’s just something about the mix of crispy bacon, smoky little sausages, and that caramelized brown sugar that keeps me coming back.

They are the kind of thing you make once, and suddenly, everyone expects them at every party. With just three ingredients, they’re easy to throw together (just wrap, sprinkle, and bake). And let’s be honest – anything wrapped in bacon is usually a good idea.

How to Make Bacon Wrapped Smokies

Here are the ingredients you need to make these bacon wrapped smokies, plus step by step instructions for how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz package Lil Smokies (we used beef)
  • 8-9 slices of bacon
  • ¼ cup brown sugar

Step by Step Instructions

1. Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, cut the bacon slices into thirds. This size is just right for wrapping around each Lil Smokie without too much overlap.

2. Set your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup. If using foil, lightly coat it with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.

3. Lay a piece of bacon flat on a plate or cutting board. Place a cocktail sausage at one end of the bacon strip, then roll it up snugly. The bacon should wrap around just once, with a little overlap.

4. Stick a toothpick through the center of each bacon wrapped weenie to hold everything together. This also makes them easy to grab when serving.

5. Place the wrapped smokies on the lined baking sheet, spacing them out so they have room to crisp up.

6. Sprinkle brown sugar generously over the top of the bacon wrapped weenies. As they bake, the sugar will melt and caramelize, giving them a sweet, slightly sticky glaze.

7. Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, keeping an eye on them. Cooking times may vary depending on your oven, so check around the 20-minute mark. You’re looking for the bacon to be golden brown and crispy. If needed, bake for a few extra minutes.

8. Remove from the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes before serving. Serve warm as-is or with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • The number of Lil Smokies in a package can vary since they’re sold by weight. Mine had 25, but yours might have a few more or less. Just use as many as you have and adjust the bacon slices accordingly.
  • Oven temperatures and cooking times aren’t always exact. Set a timer for 20 minutes, then check to see if the bacon is crisping up. If needed, let them bake a little longer until they reach your preferred level of doneness.

That’s it – just three ingredients and a little time in the oven, and you’ve got a solid appetizer that works for any occasion. Keep an eye on them while they bake since oven times can vary, but once that bacon crisps up and the brown sugar caramelizes, they’re ready to go.
